Which machine for a shared house?
Go for 8 kg or more, an A-rated model with a short 30–45 minute programme, and a door that survives being slammed. Used machines from a reputable refurbisher cost a third of new and usually come with a year of warranty.
Splitting the cost
Split the purchase equally and keep a simple note of who paid. Electricity and detergent are easiest as a flat monthly amount per person. Agree upfront what happens when someone moves out.

How many people can share one machine?
Up to about 8 people works with a schedule. Above that, either add a second machine or use fixed slots so everyone gets a fair turn.
Do we need house rules?
Two rules are enough: empty the machine within 30 minutes, and book before you wash. The schedule enforces the second one for you.
